Is CBD Marijuana? Will CBD Make Me High?
What do coffee, beer, chocolate, bottled water, and eye cream have in common? They are just a few of the mainstream products being infused with CBD – arguably, the most buzz-worthy (no pun intended) wellness ingredient to hit the natural products market in recent history.
While CBD-infused products and supplements are coming to market at break-neck speed, there is one sticking point keeping many consumers at bay: is CBD marijuana and will it make me high? The answer: no and no.
Hemp vs. Marijuana: What's the Difference?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound extracted from hemp. Hemp is in the same family as marijuana (the cannabis family), but the chemical makeup of the two plants is quite different. Hemp has considerably more CBD than marijuana and only negligible traces of THC, the chemical that gives marijuana its psychoactive effects.
Just like oranges and lemons are both citrus, hemp and marijuana are both cannabis, but look different and have a different chemical make-up. That means CBD oil can’t make you feel “high.”
Will CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?
It’s unlikely, but it could. Hemp does contain a VERY LOW amount of THC. So, conceivably, much like when you eat foods that contain poppy seeds, it could show up on a drug test. This is also true with culinary hemp oil and hemp protein products. This is one of the reasons that Kine uses isolates - so that we can ensure that all of our CBG, CBN, or CBD products have 0% THC.
- Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant family, Cannabis sativa L., but are completely different in function, cultivation and application.
- Marijuana generally has a high level of THC, the psychoactive compound that makes you high, and is used for medicinal or recreational purposes.
- Hemp may contain a trace amount of THC (less than three-tenths of one percent are allowed), but hemp has significant levels of CBD.
- CBD extracted from marijuana is illegal in most states. CBD extracted from agricultural hemp is legal under federal law, so long as it contains less than 0.3% THC.
